Every question is important, and let me assure you, I always say if I could succeed with this Macrobiotic Diet, everyone else can too! No one could have been more overwhelmed in the beginning than I. And I had to learn quickly to help my husband recover from heart disease. Most importantly though, I had to learn this well, and continue being on the leading edge of this ever evolving way of life.

So, where have I learned these answers, if they aren’t even in the macrobiotic diet books?

• Why spend the fee for a macrobiotic cooking class? Or class series?

• Aren’t I better off just to buy the food and the macrobiotic cookbooks?

Oh my gosh, these are important and life-changing questions! I personally know this because Macrobiotic Diet Cooking Classes certainly changed the lives of my dear husband and me ~ in so many, grateful ways!

But what I saw scared me; books looking brand new, she had never opened them. When she asked me if it’s okay to use her 2-year old tofu she had kept in the freezer, my heart sank. This was not the time to learn. I offered to cook for her.

Our private classes, one-on-one, provide complete hands-on experiences when our client is well enough: I start cutting a vegetable, and the client completes it. So when this client leaves the class, she’s basically prepared the dish! That’s ideal. 

Group classes differ because of the quantity needed for tasting.  I prep each dish, setting aside sample cuts to show the class with every vegetable used. In this way each participant watches the preparation, even though it’s not a hands-on. There is still great value and understanding, and you will be able to duplicate the process at home!

How’s that possible you ask??? Simple. We’ll be cooking Jovial Brown Rice  pasta, and if you prefer no flour choice at all, why, we’ll have freshly hulled brown rice just for you! Next, hmmm, seasoning. Okay, here’s the scoop: in Nabe dining, guess what! You season your own bowl! So, we’ll have 3 different levels of Macrobiotic Mitoku Shoyu for you, or the barley free San-J, and if that’s still not within your guidelines, well, there is Si Salt, Sea Salt, gomashio & shichimi. So, your meal will have a very delicious flavor.

A bit of background on this teaching I do. Really, I never thought I would teach the Macrobiotic Diet. My purpose in learning it well was to help my husband’s recovery from the painful ordeal of heart surgery. There was so much to learn. I read Macrobiotic Diet books constantly. Fred used to ask me, aren’t you ever going to read anything else?

I treated this study like my graduate studies at University of Michigan. Always my nose in books! When the person teaching the Macrobiotic Diet in Atlanta suddenly stopped teaching, Fred asked me, when are you going to start teaching Macrobiotics because someone has to do it here?And guess what? Fred asked me daily until my original no changed to yes, now I’m ready to try it. I was ready to give back for all we had learned, and for all we were grateful.

Macrobiotic Leftovers Class

Sometimes we purposely want ‘em, and sometimes they just show up by mistake, but we all have leftover’s sometimes. No matter how carefully we plan our recipes and cooking quantities. Now the trick, especially when cooking for ultimate health, and even to overcome a serious illness, is learning to deliciously prepare leftovers!

My Creative Use of Leftovers Macrobiotic Cooking Class is certainly an important way to stretch our food budget. Especially buying organic foods, and high quality Macrobiotic products, we want to use all the food we’ve prepared! And when you can truly enjoy your left-over dishes, you have a win-win, all the way!

Some diehards just toss everything out, but I even heard Michio Kushi, time and again in group and private consultations, suggest using leftover grain for breakfast porridge. Even to very ill clients. He had a reason. Maybe several.

First of all, it sure makes breakfast a whole lot easier to handle early in the morning if your grain dish is already welcoming you to your kitchen from it’s trusty little pot! Good morning to you too, dear Grain! Thanks for being here, and making my morning a little quicker! Guess the second reason. Would you believe easier digestibility? Yep, that’s it. As your grain sits overnight on your counter, covered by a bamboo sushi mat, it’s actually beginning to ferment, thus making it even more digestible than when freshly made.

As Macrobiotics is an ever-evolving diet. Mother Earth and Macrobiotics

Today’s many young vegetarians amaze me. The conscious choice of the young generation who avoid eating meat and meat products grows each year. They are quite informed on their own, and many are choosing this way of eating even though it differs from their parents. They’ve learned some incredible statistics about water and grain being used for growing cattle, that otherwise could be used to feed populations around the world. They’ve noted how vegetarian farming alone could feed the world’s population and avoid the huge water shortage we face in the years ahead.

So it’s good news for those of you beginning a macrobiotic diet, knowing our food selection greatly supports Mother Earth! Macrobiotic food selection prefers organic farming which substantiates soil, rather than depleting our farmland. Avoiding both meat and poultry, we are not perpetuating the problems raising these animals creates for our planet. Using water, land, grains and other foods that could be used throughout the world to feed the starving human population. Not to mention introducing hormones and improper animal food into the food chain.

The Macrobiotic Diet, as you will learn in macrobiotic cooking classes, asks to avoid meat and cheese, poultry and eggs, as well as all soft dairy. Soft dairy, what’s that? Everything made from milk – cow milk. When we think about it, for whom was that milk originally meant? You guessed it. The baby calf, and usually only for 4-6 months, depending on the farmer’s set-up. And if that baby calf’s milk grows a 2000 pound carcass, don’t you think that’s maybe too much for human’s physique?

This means all those soft dairy products in our grocer’s dairy section are really not meant for human consumption: butter, cream cheese, sour cream. And diet versions: margarine, cottage cheese, yoghurt. Even frozen yoghurt. The soft dairy adversely affects us above the waist, creating problems with our lungs, breast, thyroid and throat.  Poultry, meat and cheese affect us around and below the waist creating problems with our pancreas, liver, gall bladder, kidneys, reproductive organs and  intestines.

Why can we say this? Because the soft dairy is more expansive, or more yin, with energy rising upwards, and poultry, meat and cheese have dense, heavy yang energetics with a downward movement. So eliminating these foods on a macrobiotic diet leads us in the direction of health for ourselves as well as helping Mother Earth. A perfect win-win combination!
